As many local commuters will tell you, the only problem with the picturesque Lowestoft-Beccles line is that there aren’t enough trains per hour.
But this year will see the situation change, as Abellio Great Anglia have announced that they are all set to complete the long-awaited Beccles rail loop, which will allow an hourly service to pass through Lowestoft, Oulton Broad South, Beccles and Halesworth.
The loop was proposed in 1984, but there has never been an opportunity to carry out the extensive work without disrupting services. Thanks to Network Rail’s recent resignalling operation, an opportunity presented itself. Now work is going quickly, with the new loop to be opened this December.
Jonathan Denby, the head of corporate affairs for Abellio, told the Lowestoft Journal: “I really passionately believe that 2012 is going to be a fantastic year for the East Suffolk Line.” The news is just what commuters and holidaymakers need, opening up East Anglia and making travel easier.
