Travellers on the London Underground got a historic surprise last week as they got up close and personal with the 16th President of the United States and subject of the latest Spielberg biopic Abraham Lincoln.
This surprise appearance was not a Doctor Who-style time paradox, but a performance by Beccles’ own Edmond Wells, a professional lookalike whose range of famous doubles includes Bond villain Jaws, Harry Potter’s Hagrid and apoplectic hotelier Basil Fawlty.
The Illinois tourist board was looking for ways to promote tourism in Lincoln’s home state, and hit on the idea of sending the nation’s best lookalike on a publicity-building trip around London.
Mr Wells told the Eastern Daily Press: “I had an email from an entertainment agent asking if I’d be able to do it. I was at a standing start and had to be Abe within four days.”
Mr Wells’ London adventure was a resounding success, and saw him tackle the tube in character, as well as posing near various London landmarks, including a shot on a ‘Boris bike.’
