What’s taking so long, and what is the future for this historic tavern?
Planning applications were lodged soon after the acquisition of the 400 year old coaching inn, but the proposed £1 million refit has not yet materialised. Among Wetherspoon’s proposed changes are a new single-storey garden room at the back of the pub, a fully redesigned interior which includes a brand new granite-topped bar. No changes have been announced to plans to retain the hotel’s 12 guest rooms.
Following local residents’ concern that building work in the hotel risked damaging one of Beccles’ most recognisable historical landmarks, a report has been submitted to Waveney District Council which said: ìModifications and alterations have been reviewed to ensure that the maximum amount of important historic fabric is retained.î
One new development gives hope that the King’s Head Hotel will reopen soon: Wetherspoon’s have submitted a proposal for the pub’s signage for Council approval. If you want to check out the first glimpse of The King’s Head’s new identity, click here to see the proposed sign.
